As a key member of our Technology Engineering and Design (TED) team, Caroline works with clients across a broad range of technologies in the field of engineering, with a particular emphasis on medical devices and textiles. This includes advising on patents together with designs and copyright. As well as being a UK and European Patent Attorney, Caroline is also a qualified Patent Attorney Litigator with experience handling litigation before the UK High Court and Patents County Court.
Whilst Caroline’s work involves the traditional drafting and prosecution of patent applications before the UK IPO and the EPO, she is also experienced in handling oppositions and appeals before the EPO and has gained recent success in a string of related oppositions and appeals for Novo Nordisk in the field of transcutaneous drug delivery. Overall, however, she prides herself on working closely with clients to develop strategies aimed at protecting their business and ensuring a competitive advantage whilst keeping an eye on commercial needs and financial constraints.
As mentioned above, Caroline has expertise in the field of designs and copyright, with a particular emphasis on registered designs. Following the UK’s departure from the EU, she has worked with other colleagues in the TED team and our EU-based offices to develop an offering aimed at helping clients obtain consistent registered design protection in the UK and across the EU in a seamless and cost-effective manner. Caroline tutors candidates taking the Patent Examination Board Qualifying Examinations on the topic of Design and Copyright law.
Caroline heads up our Assignments team and has considerable expertise in patent and design ownership issues, including entitlement and the recordal of assignments, licences, changes of name and other transactions before the relevant intellectual property offices.
Prior to joining Potter Clarkson in 1999, Caroline was a patent examiner at the UK Patent Office (now the UK Intellectual Property Office), handling applications in the areas of textile technologies, downhole mining and oilfield equipment and optical devices.
Caroline studied Physics at Loughborough University and became a partner in 2010. In 2012 she gained an LLM master’s degree in Intellectual Property Litigation from Nottingham Law School and was awarded a Higher Courts Litigation Certificate in 2013.
